Over the years, the Almanac has featured such themes as “Expressions” – 2002, “Young Achievers” – 2003, “At Home with My Family” – 2004, “Celebrating Our Diversity” – 2005, “Making A Difference for our Environment” – 2006 and “The Value of Team Activity” – 2007.

The theme for the 2008 Almanac was chosen to highlight beautiful locations in our country as potential tourist sites. Many of our nation’s natural treasures are often magnified but much more of our beautiful locations that give life to our splendid land remain largely unknown to many. The 2008 Almanac brings into focus and celebrate some of the many parts of our nation’s beautiful landscape and tourist destinations through the eyes of our young people.

Mr. Radhakrishna Sharma, Chief Executive Officer, in his address to the gathering, stated that the aim in this card strategy is to reduce the use of cash by customers and allow them to improve their personal security. "The levels of crime directly related to our cash based payment system dictates that we seek a credible and reliable alternative, such as offered in the plastic card environment."  He noted however, that the success and benefits of the varied card products can only be realized and enjoyed if citizens fully embrace them to give meaning to the benefits the offer - security, reliability and convenience.

The CEO called for the adoption of a culture in financial transactions that accommodates card technology adding that "our legal systems and business rules must be tailored to provide the coverage that is required when doing business using plastic cards".  He stated that such a partnership approach between regulatory, legal, business and consumer agents will facilitate smooth and hassle free electronic commerce to the overall benefit of the country's economy.

Chairman of the Bank, Mr. Robin Stoby, in brief remarks, declared that the VISA cards "give you the power to make credit purchases worldwide". He stated that anyone can apply noting that what is expected is the customer to show creditworthiness and the ability to repay. He asserted that the offering of the cards was not motivated by profit and stated that the fees charged are negligible when compared to the real cost of the service.

At the ceremony, a promotion was announced which will see no interest being charged for the first three months of the card being issued following which a draw will be held in the four categories where $100,000 will be awarded to the winner of each category.  Persons interested in applying for the Credit cards have to be over 18 years and can collect an application form from any of GBTI's branches.

Minister of Finance, Dr. Ashni Singh cut the ceremonial ribbon to open the facility in the presence of a small but distinguished gathering including GBTI Chairman, Mr. Robin Stoby; Chief Executive Officer, Mr. Radhakrishna Sharma; Governor of the Bank of Guyana, Mr. Lawrence Williams; Chief Executive Officer of the Local Organising Committee for CWC 2007, Mr. Karran Singh; proprietor of Buddy’s International Hotel, Mr. Omprakash “Buddy” Shivraj and other specially invited guests.

In his feature address, Minister Singh lauded the GBTI and its management for their insight in bringing state of the art banking literally to the doorsteps of the thousands of people who live and the hundreds of businesses that operate on the East Bank Demerara. He noted that the East Bank corridor plays a strategic role as a
route connecting the Cheddi Jagan International Airport to the city, along with other important road linkages, the West Demerara, the mining town of Linden through which there is connection to the interior and Brazil, and too, its close proximity to the Demerara River.

More recently, he noted, there have been vast investments by Central Government to the infrastructure in the modernizing of the airport, upgrading the highway, developing housing areas and providing ancillary services to them, resulting in the phenomenal expansion and upsurge of new housing schemes, such as Grove and Diamond, where thousands of Guyanese families now reside. As such, he said GBTI’s establishment of the new branch makes “an extremely valuable decision and most commendable contribution to the economic and financial landscape of the East Bank of Demerara.” He said too the fact that the facility is physically located in an international hotel is a significant indication of the coming of age in the country’s service systems.

Chairman of the Bank, Mr. Robin Stoby, in his remarks, alluded to one of Shakespeare’s quotes: “Suit the action to the word, the word to the action,” and one of the bank’s pseudonyms “GBTI the Action Bank”, and noted that action is what the bank promised and action is what it has delivered. He said the move to establish the branch in the hotel may have been regarded as a bold step to take in an area not traditionally viewed as a banking location, but it is the belief of the bank that it is necessary to identify new areas of opportunity to keep up its momentum of providing quality services to the Guyanese public.

In his address, Chief Executive Officer, Mr. Radhakrishna Sharma said the GBTI Providence Branch follows closely the opening of the Lethem branch in August 2006 and represents yet another step by the institution in “the systematic fulfillment of our mission to take banking services to communities across Guyana.” He said the bank’s legacy of branch banking, introducing the latest in banking technology, and community involvement, are just some of the characteristics of the institution that have featured constantly over the years.

GBTI, according to the CEO, views every new branch as a “key element in revitalization, facilitating access to credit, investments and services that individuals, businesses and community institutions need in order to grow and prosper.” As such, GBTI is confident about what the future holds for Guyana and is happy to take the bold step to provide vital banking services, stimulate small business and support new investment, economic growth and job creation for the more than 50,000 residents and businesses of the East Bank corridor, he said. Remarking that GBTI is a proven market leader in the industry, setting the benchmark against which excellence can be measured, Sharma listed as among some of the achievements, GBTI in mid-2006 becoming the first Guyanese financial institution to be approved membership of VISA international; November 2006 launching of the first VISA Card product in Guyana, the GBTI Visa Travel Classic Card. Additionally, visitors to Guyana can now visit any GBTI branch and obtain cash advances on their VISA card, customers are also able to apply for an American Express Card, and in a few months the bank will launch its VISA branded GBTI Credit Card.

GBTI has also developed a community focus where it recognizes and accepts its responsibilities to the community where it operates and has structured programmes to achieve its community goals.

In closing remarks, Ms. Blair said she and the rest of her staff who are proud to be in the team selected to manage the branch, look forward to the opportunity to serve the public in the lovely ambience GBTI has created. She said too, they look forward to being involved with the community as they plan to work to strengthen the relationship between GBTI and residents.

The task of chairing the ceremony was that of Junior Manager, Research and Planning, Mr. Sean Noel.

2007-01-26 - EUROPEAN UNION FINANCING FACILITY LAUNCHED

On January 26, 2007, the European Union Financial Facility in support of the rice sector was officially launched by the Honourable Robert Persaud, Minister of Agriculture, at the GBTI Recreational Centre, Kaieteur Road, Bel Air Park.

The overall objective of the Financial Facility is two-fold:

  • To increase the efficiency and sustainability of the rice industry in Guyana.
  • To enhance the competitive position of the rice chain actors, i.e., rice producers, rice millers/exporters and input suppliers.

GBTI has been selected to administer the G$1.6B facility and loans under this scheme will be targeted to rice producers for working capital and purchase of machinery and equipment; to millers and exporters for working capital, purchase of machinery and equipment and rehabilitation or expansion of facilities; and importers of fertilizers, pesticides and machinery and equipment. The interest rates on these loans will range from 6% to 11% and all loans will be assessed and rated in accordance with sound lending principles.

In his remarks, Mr Radhakrishna Sharma, Chief Executive Officer of GBTI spoke of GBTI’s long association with the rice industry which dates back to the late 1980’s where apart from the then GAIBANK, we were the only commercial bank lending significantly to the industry. He noted that by the 1990’s this industry accounted for $1.7B or 24% of our loan portfolio, a sum which peaked to $3.2B at the end of 2001. He made reference to the fact that as testimony to the Bank’s commitment to the sector and the country, in the year 2000, GBTI restructured and rescheduled close to $3B of the indebtedness of farmers and millers to aid the industry’s recovery and today the indebtedness of the industry to the bank stands at $1.4B or 14% of our loan portfolio, making our Bank the largest provider of credit to the rice industry. The Chief Executive Officer concluded by thanking the Government of Guyana for the part it played in the realization of this financial facility and the European Union for selecting and entrusting GBTI with the responsibility of managing this Scheme.

Minister of Agriculture, Mr Robert Persaud said that the venture is a part of the government’s continued commitment to seek resources for the development of the industry. He said that the funds available will serve as an impetus to drive production and re-investment which are needed to enhance competitiveness and ensure stability in the industry.

Describing the EU decision to provide financing to the rice sector, Mr Percival Marie – Director of CARIFORUM, said that the financial facility was the first of its kind and a new system had to be designed, hence, the initial lengthy process. He recalled the Government of Guyana's intervention to provide a guarantee amongst other concessions to the Banks to facilitate the fruition of the facility.

Also addressing the gathering at the launching ceremony were Ms Helen Jenkinson – Charge d’ Affaires of the Delegation of the European Commission and Mr Dharamkumar Seeraj, General Secretary of the Guyana Rice Producers Association.
