2006-12-15 - GBTI 2007 ALMANAC “THE VALUE OF TEAM ACTIVITY” LAUNCHED
On Friday, December 15, 2006 the Bank launched its 2007 Almanac, which is based on the theme “The Value of Team Activity.”
In 2001, GBTI initiated an approach using its Annual Almanac as a medium for the presentation of the perspectives of young people in the society, with the aim of encouraging them to adopt positive values and attitudes. As such, over the years, the Almanac has featured such themes as “Expressions” – 2002, “Young Achievers” – 2003, “At Home With My Family” – 2004, “Celebrating Our Diversity” – 2005 and “Making A Difference for our Environment” – 2006.
The theme for the 2007 Almanac was chosen to highlight the immense value of team activity to young people as a chance for them to build individual character and develop a sense of community pride. The competition invited young people to share, through essay, how their involvement in a team activity has helped to build and develop their character and personality.
Six entries were chosen to appear on the Almanac, and, along with another six outstanding entries are being displayed in the Bank during December 2006.
The six selected entries were submitted by:
- Miss Regina Chand
- Mr Wazim Sharma

He indicated that the bank has been following the advances and trends and the changing lifestyles of the average Guyanese and has discovered he/she has a computer, travels abroad intermittently, has more disposable income, engages in commerce and is very security conscious and this has led GBTI to concluding that a Visa Travel Card would be most useful to the average Guyanese.

With the card one can access monies from ATM machines overseas which carry the VISA Plus sign and can shop, book cruises, accommodation and car rentals online. The GBTI VISA Travel Classic Card can only be used while funds are available on the card, since it is a pre-paid card. The card can be purchased for a minimum of US$50 and a maximum of US$5,000. The CEO observed further that the issuance of the card is both a milestone for the bank and Guyana as it means the country is now on the international card map. “Consequently, when you use the GBTI Visa Travel Classic Card, you contribute to placing not just GBTI on the international scene, but in the broader scope, you contribute to placing Guyana - our country out front and in the first world,” he said. The GBTI VISA Travel Classic Card will carry the Kaieteur Falls logo, as the Bank feels that this symbol is readily identified with Guyana and is one of its most famous tourist attractions.

Business Strategy within the C.S.M.E.” and examined issues critical
to local businesses as it relates to the newly established Caricom Single
Market and Economy.

His Excellency President Bharrat Jagdeo delivered brief
remarks and declared the Conference open, while Ambassador Joan Underwood,
Antigua and Barbuda’s Non Resident Ambassador to Latin America
and the country’s National CSME Coordinator, presented the feature
address.

In his opening remarks, C.E.O. of the Bank, Mr. Radhakrishna
Sharma, said “Guyana has lived by the spirit of the protocols
but the level of courtesy and openness we display towards other states
and their nationals is not evident or reciprocated in parts of the region
and this must be addressed by the governments, if we are to make meaningful
progress in the implementation of the single market.” He added
“We are all challenged to play by the rules of the game but, sadly,
the many contradictions we see in the actions of some states, especially
in the treatment of our exports - a case in point being our chicken
and rice exports - show little respect for the rules that are established.”
The C.E.O. stated that only a common will and desire for the outcome
can see the process successfully through, he posited.

PRESIDENT Bharrat Jagdeo, in his remarks, said that
the need for deepening the integration process within the Caribbean
Community (CARICOM) is even greater than ever, in the face of free trade
and globalisation.
Non-Resident Ambassador of Antigua and Barbuda to Latin
America, Ms Joan Underwood, who delivered the keynote address, said
that the CSME would give small states a strong voice in the global arena.
Conceding that challenges are inevitable in the present global scenario,
Underwood emphasised that tenacity and creativity are needed for survival
and, ultimately, to determine the destination of the region and the
path towards reaching it. She said, to achieve the goal, it is necessary
to draw from the intellectual and creative capacity of the region.
Ambassador Underwood also underscored the necessity
for smaller business entities to be “agile and adaptive”
to the situation when facing competition from larger ones with greater
capital and superior technology. She acknowledged that, with the advent
of the CSME, it is necessary to think more strategically and pursue
lucrative markets aggressively. The importance of the knowledge and
awareness of the CSME throughout the region is an essential component
for a successful outcome of economic integration, Underwood offered.
